Boston Teachers and Their Union Respond to Supt. Johnson on the Extended School Day and Teacher Compensation

Seth Peterson, Teacher, Snowden

After an opening statement from BTU President Richard Stutman, BTU teachers took the stage.

Seth Petersen, a teacher at the Snowden International School, challenged the audience:

"For all those who believe a Boston teacher's hours are short, I invite you to follow me or any of my colleagues, any day of the week. Get up at 5AM, teach five classes, attend meetings, stay after school to help, to tutor, to give make-up work and quizzes, plan and prepare the room for tomorrow's lessons, and get  home 10 sometimes 12 hours after you left the house."

Other BTU teachers who spoke passionately included LauraLee Johnson and Ondrea Johnson both from the Edwards Middle School — which already has an extended day for which teachers are compensated; and Erica Ford of Boston Latin Academy.
