Electoral News and Action

The Boston Teachers Union works politically through the Committee on Political Education (COPE) to elect candidates who support public education and who otherwise favor our positions on a variety of work-related issues.

The membership voted in 2010 to require all candidates seeking the BTU's endorsement to fill out a questionnaire. The COPE Committee, after reviewing the answers to its questions and after interviewing candidates, makes its recommendations to the Executive Board, and then the full membership. A 2/3rds vote for approval is required at the membership meeting.

How Your Legislators Voted on the Education Reform Bill

Despite the efforts of the BTU and other local and statewide teaches' unions, Education Reform legislation was passed in January 2010 that we consider very negative for our members and for the future of public education. These votes included those of many legislators who have consistently received the endorsement and support of our union.

See how the AFTMA-endorsed and the BTU-endorsed candidates voted on the Ed Reform billl.
