Dear Retiree:

You have good reason to be proud of your years as a part of our educational system, and we know you'll want to maintain your ties with colleagues by joining the Retired Teachers Chapter of the BTU.

Your monthly dues deduction ($5.00 for teachers and $2.50 for paras) will usually start a month after we receive your application for membership. Our membership year runs from September 1 through August 31.

You can receive your information packet with an application for membership by calling (617) 288–2000 any Wednesday or Thursday between 10:00 A.M. and 2:00 P.M. You must fill out an application to become a member. It is not automatic simply because you are retired.

Sincerely and fraternally yours,
Eileen Ganley, Chairwoman
Membership Committee

Retired Teachers Chapter BTU
Benefits of Membership

Health & Welfare

Eyeglass Benefit
Members who have paid dues for two consecutive years are eligible for a new pair of eyeglasses every 24 months. Members of the Retired Teachers Chapter only are entitled to a new pair of glasses every two(or more)years.

For this benefit, a member is defined as one who has paid his/her full dues ($60 or $30) for two consecutive years. The Retired Teachers Chapter - not the Eye Care Center, maintains eligibility for this benefit.

Because of limited resources, dependents will not be covered for this benefit. Coverage is only for the member.

Benefits apply only for a change in prescription. Eyeglasses only will be provided. Eye examinations will not be provided. You must bring a prescription from your eye doctor. The prescription must be no more than one year old.

After 24 months as a RTC member, you may obtain a new pair of eyeglasses only if there is a change in eyeglass prescription.

The Eye Care Center at the BTU Building will order the glasses for you.

Members must call for an appointment prior to coming to the Eye Care Center (617-288-5540), either to order to pick-up eyeglasses.

The facility will be open for RTC members from September through June from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday, except during holidays and vacation weeks.

Most requests will be covered: single lens or bifocals, glass or plastic, clear and tinted. Free adjustments and simple repairs to the most recent eyeglasses reveived through the Eye Care Center will be provided at the Eye Care Center when time and material are available. Adjustments and repairs will not be made to any other eyeglasses.

Metal and designer frames are too expensive to be included in this plan.

Contact lenses and cataract prescriptions are also too expensive to be included.

Covered RTC members can purchase an additional pair of eyeglasses at the Eye Care Center at their own expense. If you wish to upgrade the eyeglasses offered under the basic plan, you are free to select anything that is available at the time, but you must pay the additional cost. Payment is due the day you choose the glasses. Credit cards are not accepted.
