Boston Teachers Union
e-Bulletin
#02
(2007-08),  08/29/08
Greetings!

Good day and we hope you enjoy your last few days of summer break. A special welcome to first year teachers and paraprofessionals who are receiving this e-Bulletin. These bulletins come out weekly during the school year. If you know someone who didn't receive the bulletin, please forward to him or her. We have added your name to our email list-serve (7900 members and growing). The list  is fully protected and its use is limited strictly to the mailing of these weekly bulletins. You can add another preferred email address if you wish by clicking on the box above right. You can delete any address, as well, by going to the unsubscribe button at the end of this email.

This is your bulletin. If you have any questions or suggestions for this space. Please let us know.

Please remember that all members are invited to attend our Welcome Back Party on Thursday, 9/11, at the BTU, beginning after school.

A few things on pay:

  • Teachers first paycheck for 2008/09 will be issued on 09/05/08
  • Para's 26 payments - 08/30/08 to 09/12/08, paycheck issued on 09/19/08
  • Para's 21 payments - 09/02/08 to 09/12/08, paycheck issued on 9/19/08
  • Subs - Paycheck issued on 09/19/08

Strong suggestion: Maintain your pay stubs in a file. If you are supposed to get a pay raise (lane change, step increase or whatever),  wait two or three pay cycles, then call HR (9600) to check on the status of your salary adjustment. If you do not get a satisfactory answer, please call the union office (617-288-2000) or email Jenna for para/substitute issues, Michael for elementary teacher issues, and Caren for secondary school issues.

All pay rates can be found here for teachers and paras .  For superintendent's school salaries, please multiply teacher salaries by 1.1538. (We have had a slight web problem. As soon as it is corrected, superintendent's teacher salary rates will be posted on line. For now, you have to multiply the old-fashioned way. Sorry.)  To calculate paraprofessional salaries in superintendent's schools, add one hour to the work day, to 7.17, and multiply by the appropriate hourly wage.

Substitute teacher salaries this year are as follows: Per diem, $119.65; Long Term after 10 days, $133.10; after 25 days $240.84; cluster substitute teachers, $145.66. The membership letter that went out last week mistakenly said that long term substitute teachers get a bump in pay after 30 days. The bump comes after 25 days.

For all BTU members the salary in effect as of 9/1/08 reflects a 3% raise over last June's salary. An additional 1% salary increase for all will take effect on 2/1/09.

*************************************************
The Boston Business Journal (BBJ) published two weeks ago an op-ed piece by Boston Foundation head Paul Grogan suggesting that pilot schools are essentially the only cause for hope in our school system. The piece diminishes the good work done every day in the other 80+ percent of our schools that are not pilot.  The BBJ also published a rebuttal by Union President Richard Stutman.

Please see the section below for information regarding the retirement board election. Ballots are out and should be received in your homes shortly. Please mail them back promptly and please remember to vote for BTU Elementary Field Rep. Michael McLaughlin and Boston firefighter Sean Kelly. Michael will of course continue to serve as BTU Elementary Field Rep., but he will serve as one of the labor representatives on the retirement board representing our interests at the board's monthly meetings. We appreciate Michael's acceptance of this responsibility and we will work hard to get him elected. Please vote.

*************************************************

Reminder on Day 1, Tuesday, the administration gets 30 minutes at the front of the day for orientation, and our members get the rest of the day for room and course preparation. We negotiated this time a few years ago to give our members set-up time at the start of the year. On Day 2, Wednesday, your BTU Union representative gets 30 minutes for union orientation. The rest of the day is PD time. Newspapers that can serve as a template for discussion on Day 2 have been sent to all union representatives.

Retirement Board Election. BTU Urges Vote for Michael McLaughlin

An election to fill the two elected seats on the Boston Retirement Board will be held this year. The ballots are out. Please mail your in.  The BTU has endorsed one of its own, Michael McLaughlin (Elem. Field Rep), for this position. Michael has also been endorsed by Edward Welch, Secretary-Treasurer of the BTU and Trustee of the BRB from 1997-2008. Ed is retiring after more than 40 years of service. Please look for the ballots in your mail.

This is a most important election, and the BTU has held one of the two labor seats on the Boston Retirement Board for a good while. We need to continue to hold onto these seats as the board makes many decisions that impact our retirement. Michael has been endorsed by the BTU membership.

Union Newspaper Co-Editorship Posting

The Boston Union Teacher has had two co-editors, Mary Glynn and Erik Berg, for the last few years.  Erik Berg has relinquished the position. He had been on leave last year and during that time had been replaced by Garret Virchick. With Erik's leaving, we will be re-posting the job. Erik will be heading up our team that is planning for the opening of the BTU  Pilot School in September 2009. Mary Glynn will continue as co-editor, and we thank Mary, Erik, and Garret for all of their work in he last few years in continuing our commitment to publishing an informative and creative union newspaper. By the way, we won yet another award from the AFT this past Summer as we continue our tradition of being an award-winning newspaper. Our paper, incidentally, is quite ambitious and accomplished, and we expect to keep it in that tradition.

The co-editor position pays approximately $14,000 per year, and the co-editors are responsible for 11 monthly newspapers plus any special editions that are needed. The co-editor must be familiar with any and all activities related to the writing, reporting, production, technology, and lay-out of a print newspaper. The co-editor must also be familiar in general with union policies and procedures. The position is open to all union members. Please submit a brief resume, a letter of interest, and any relevant work to rstutman@btu.org by September 15. Interviews will be conducted thereafter. Thank you.

Paying Students for Performance: Mixed to Poor Results in New York

There are some educational entrepreneurs who believe that the best way to reform our schools is to provide special financial incentives to both teachers and students. To be sure, there are folks on both sides of the issue. In our own BPS, for example, the O'Bryant School administrator acting on his own authority allowed a financial incentive program for teachers that will be based on the number of their students who do well on the AP exams. The BTU has challenged the O'Bryant program inasmuch as its institution was not  negotiated. A similar program--this one for students-- in the New York schools has just concluded its first year with very mixed results. See here and below for more information. We will keep you posted on the Boston experiment and the course of our grievance. Bottom line for us and,  we feel, most members is that we resent the notion that we are not already working as hard and as effectively as we can...and that it takes a financial bribe to make us work better.

Foundation Grant on Behalf of Deceased Blackstone Teacher Open to Boston Teachers

Jennifer Stowers was a first year teacher at the Blackstone School when she passed away in 2003. Her family and friends have established a foundation in her name and have raised money for a yearly scholarship. The purpose of this foundation is to promote and maintain the memory of Jennifer Lee Stowers and her personal vision of "saving the world, one child at a time." The foundation will provide funds, gifts, and/or donations to select inner-city educational institutions for the purpose of enhancing the educational experiences of children, supporting their learning environments, and supporting educational initiatives that directly benefit children. See the foundation's webpage for more information. One $4000 grant is awarded each year and is open to both classroom teachers and student teachers.

Questions can be addressed here or to Ellen Stowers, P.O. Box 1784,
Derry NH 03038.

We can honor the memory of this wonderful teacher and support her family by applying for a grant from the foundation. Thank you to the family of Jennifer Stowers.
