#36
(2007-08),  04/27/08

Greetings!

We hope you had a nice, restful spring break. Last week was a quiet week, though we did pick up another four Discovery School applications. Fourteen schools have now submitted applications for Discovery status. We will begin reviewing the applications this week, and  we will reply shortly with some preliminary feedback to those schools seeking Discovery status. Four of the schools that submitted Discovery applications received a $20,000 grant one month ago from the Boston Foundation to consider Pilot status. We welcome all applicants.

..................................***

Teacher and Para excess pools run this week. On Monday, the teacher MOCK pool runs 4/28, from 4-6, at the BTU.

The Para pool is the 29th & the teacher pools are April 30, May 1 and 2. All of these events will take place in the Winter Chambers, 26 Court Street. All those excessed (teachers and paras) will receive a letter from the SD  with the necessary details, including the day and time of the specific pools for teachers. The SD will also provide all with the seniority and vacancy lists and post them on MyBPS. Any questions on teacher issues, please email Mike or Caren . Questions on Para issues, please email Jenna .

Many of the teacher pools will fall far short of having sufficient positions to accommodate all of our excessed members. This is not a good situation for many of our excessed teacher population. The shortage of teacher positions, and perhaps of para positions as well, will clearly influence our willingness to approve new pilot schools above and beyond what is required under contract (*). Pilot school vacancies do not appear as eligible vacancies in the teacher and paraprofessional excess pools, and therefore, the creation of additional Pilot vacancies will exacerbate the current shortages.

(*) The contract requires that 5 pilots, if there are sufficient proposals to consider, be created through Sept. 09.

ExCL a.k.a. The Recycling Center --Terrific Stop for Teachers to Get Needed Materials

ExCL is Extras for Creative Learning, a local, independent non-profit that has provided materials of many kinds to BPS teachers for almost 30 years now. Basically, ExCL solicits donations of material goods such as brand-new office supplies, arts and crafts supplies, and office furniture that businesses have slated for the trash. ExCL picks up those materials and provides them to local educators, parents, after-school providers, and others to better serve children or to engage in creative endeavors. You may know it as "the recycle center" as it is often colloquially known.  They are working really hard to build the organization and to increase the ways in which we can support BPS teachers and schools, who are our largest constituency.

Their special right now: Unlimited Binders. Take a 100, take 200! How about 300! They are drowning in them! Please!
