Greetings!

We are gearing up for our rally at School  March 24, 2010, at 5:00 PM. Our reason for rallying at Ct. St. on the night the appointed School Committee votes on next year's budget is two-fold:
  • Budget cuts hurt our students
  • Our so-called under-performing schools are really under-resourced schools that have been underfunded for years.

Our schools have faced extraordinary budget cuts ($32.5 Million for FY2011 alone) for the last few years. These cuts have hurt our students' development and have hurt the performance of our schools. There's no denying this. What we need is a school committee to stand tall and insist on adequate funding for our schools.

The rally begins at 5:00 outside School Committee headquarters. We ask that our members and supporters (feel free to invite parents and other members of your school site council) report promptly at 5:00 for our rally.
The BTU will serve as a drop-off point for those who wish to take the T and leave their cars. Coffee and refreshments will be served, beginning at 2:15. Signs, placards, and other materials will be provided.  We hope to see you there! We need you there!

We congratulate New Mission High School for its victory last week The New Mission boys' basketball team won the Division 4 North bracket, defeating Cathedral. This victory capped a playoff run in which New Mission won each of its three playoff games by more than 28 or more points. Congratulations to coach Cory McCarthy and his outstanding team!
Haitian Relief Effort Needs Help on March 20

Over the last month or two we have gathered a huge trailer of goods for the Haitian relief effort. The trailer is stored at the BTU. The items stored in the container will be moved to Somerville on March 20th to be shipped on the same day. Those who are volunteering will need a lot of help on March 20 since everything has to be loaded on the ship by 10:30AM.  Our volunteers, headed by Paula Sylvestre, are looking for help early in the AM on March 20th.
Chilean Relief Effort

On February 27, 2010, there was a devastating 8.8 earthquake in central Chile.  There were over 700 deaths and major destruction of infrastructure, homes, hospitals and schools.  We urge BTU members to donate if possible to Unicef .  They are "committed to assist those affected by the earthquake, especially the children."

Health and Welfare Long-Time Employee Running for a Cure for Prostate Cancer

RUNNING FOR A CAUSE.... My name is Cathy Lordan.  I have worked at the Boston Teachers' Union, Eye Care Center, for the past 30 years.  This past Summer, I lost my husband to his battle with prostate cancer.  Together, my children and I are training for the Chicago marathon to raise money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation with the hope of getting a little closer to finding a cure.  My husband and many other men have had to fight this long hard battle without a choice.  My husband fought his battle with grace and dignity.  Although we may not be able to run with the same grace and dignity he so eloquently displayed, we continue with the fight!  Please help us fight so that maybe one less person will have to suffer this battle. Donations can be made here to Athletesforacure.com, in loving memory of Richard P. Lordan.
