Greetings!

Good Day,

This Wednesday is the regularly-scheduled monthly membership meeting. We will provide an update as to recent developments, including the superintendent's Acceleration Agenda. All BTU members are welcome, and we encourage all to attend. The meeting starts at 4:00 PM.

On ELL...We have met numerous times with the school department since last August on the ELL Category training issue. There is no change in policy: the category level training is NOT mandatory. We have suggested a series of proposals that would attract people on a voluntary basis to participate in the category training. We are meeting with the department again this week on this issue. If you wish to take part in the training, feel free to do so. If you do not, or cannot, then don't. Without question, the school department is facing some heat on this issue--which is why we have proposed a series of ideas to help get the training accomplished on a voluntary basis.

Meanwhile, the Boston School Committee established a 16-member ELL task force last November presumably to look at this situation, as well as, other pressing ELL issues. Looking at the composition of the school committee's chosen group, one will see a group devoid of any BPS professionals, BTU, BASAS, or otherwise. The short answer: No representative of these groups was invited to participate.

There are no more specifics to announce on the superintendent's T u r n a r o u n d plan. The superintendent has identified 14 schools as 'underperforming' and in need of remediation. The state may or may not agree with the designation of each of those schools, though it appears that 12 or 13 of the superintendent's 14 schools, will  ultimately, be found on the state's list as well. Absolute certainty isn't expected for a while, perhaps as long as another month or two or three.  The number of designated schools, '14,' too, is uncertain and is subject to change. Bottom line: We have to wait and see. The BTU leadership has now been out to each of the 14 schools. We will come out again to each of the schools once more details are known, or sooner if you wish. Just call the BTU office and set up an appointment, and we will accommodate all schools as soon as a visit can be arranged.

In the meantime, if you have any questions, email either Caren , Michael , or Jenna .
