Greetings!

Good Day,

Haitian relief efforts took place at the BTU on Saturday, 1/23. Clothing, supplies, and food were raised in abundance. Thank you to all who donated. Thank you all who organized this effort .

Special thanks go to Paula Sylvestre. Any other efforts we hear about will be publicized as well. This is an issue, regrettably, that will not be going away for a very long time. Below is a letter of thanks from Ray of Hope Children Services, Inc.:

"To the staff of the following schools:  Joseph Lee, Manning, Brook Farm Academy, Boston International, Winthrop, Chittick, Channing, Tynan, Umana Barnes, Boston Latin School, Tobin, Ellis, Unified Student Services, Grew, Roosevelt, Winthrop and the following organizations: Brown Brothers Harrinman & Co., Suffolk County District Attorney's office, Boston Teachers Union, and the Twelfth Baptist Church

"Thanks to each one of you for being a "Ray of Hope" for Haiti in its time of need.  Your donation of time, money and most needed items is appreciated and will surely help many people in Haiti."

Paula Sylvestre
President/Founder

Ed Reform Legislation passed the House and the Senate ten days ago.  See how our representatives voted; see how our senators voted. Another list of how the BTU's endorsed candidates, as well as the AFT-MA's endorsed candidates, voted will also be placed on our web page very shortly.  For an analysis of the bill, see the AFT-MA's webpage . The AFT-MA is our parent organization and is responsible for our lobbying efforts on Beacon Hill. We will have more information once the DOE promulgates its rules and regulations on implementation.

Other issues....
Swine Flu clinic was held at the BTU on Thursday, 1/21; hundreds attended. The city is offering many more clinics. Please remember that all staff receive up to 2 hours' release time to receive a flu shot. You can access a calendar of clinics here .

New School Department Ethics memo
-Our atty., Matt Dwyer, has told us that we have to sign the document. There are some issues with the memo that Atty. Dwyer will address. Those issues, however, do not negate our responsibility to sign the memo.

O'Bryant HS Fundraiser to Help Haitian Immigrants
The TAG & John D. O'Bryant fundraiser to help the Haitian immigrant population of Munoz, Dominican Republic will be held this Friday at the Baseball Tavern starting at 8PM.  100% of proceeds go directly towards buying water tanks to increase the access to potable water for the village, buy tin to fix leaking roofs and to pay for airfare of the 13 students who will spend their vacation helping the local children learn Spanish as a second language.  With have some great prizes to raffle off, including tickets to the Red Sox, Celtics and Bruins.

We chose to help the village and its Haitian population due to the lack of basic necessities such as clean water and the lack of school supplies in the very small local school.  The village expects to receive an immigration surge due to the earthquake.

MIT Program for all BTU Science Teachers

We received this memo from some friends at MIT:

We are writing in the hoping of soliciting your advice for our "Science of the Eye: Bringing Vision into the Classroom" project. This program was founded in the summer of 2009 to work with high school biology teachers and others to increase access to active, inquiry-based science education in Massachusetts public schools. Headquartered at MIT, it is funded by a grant from the National Eye Institute-- part of the National Institutes of Health.

Science of the Eye offers regional professional development workshops to biology teachers, in partnership with the Massachusetts Association of Biology Teachers (MABT). The workshops present curriculum modules that emphasize hands-on, laboratory activities and incorporate current research into the eye and vision.

Currently, we offer two-hour workshops on eye anatomy and function, eye evolution and genomics, photoreceptors and color vision and vision and the brain.  Some workshop activities include a cow eye dissection, observation of eyeless flies, and visualizing optical illusions.  The workshop activities are focused on human disease in an effort to engage students in the material.  All workshops are free and resources such as PowerPoint presentations, handouts, and content material provided.

We've gotten a lot of positive feedback from the teachers who have participated.  However we understand the importance of tailoring the workshops to the particular needs of the teachers who will be participating, and their students. For that, we need your help.

In the near future, we plan to offer one or more of these workshops specifically for Boston science teachers.  For these to be effective we need initial advice from a few science teachers with experience in the Boston public schools.  Our questions include selection of workshop content, workshop timing and scheduling during the school year, and workshop location(s).   Though we aware of the unceasing time pressures on classroom teachers, we hope that a few of you could make time for one or two 45 minute planning meetings, with the possibility of follow up consultations as the workshops are finalized.
