Service in the Community
You can often find BTU members active in the community. . .
BTU members are involved in a wide variety of activities in the community including fundraising, offering their time and skills to community service programs, and organizing in support of issues that benefit Massachusetts working people across the state. Some of the activities are directly supported by the union and are undertaken on a yearly basis; others are taken up as the need arises at the initiative of our members.
Rosie's Place and Pine Street Inn
For almost twenty year BTU members have hosted an annual fundraiser in March to benefit the Pine Street Inn and Rosie's Place. 2010 was no exception. Through the hard work of the BTU Social Committee and building reps, our members raised $5,600 from ticket sales and donations.
This year, Rosie’s Place celebrated its 35th year as a sanctuary for homeless women in the Boston area. The Pine Street Inn has been providing service to both homeless men and women for forty years.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

The Boston Teachers Union participates in the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in the fall of each year. The walk raises money for cancer research and is the nation's oldest and most successful one-day walk.
Members can participate by joining walk teams,by soliciting sponsors of walkers, and by helping out on the day of the walk.
Labor Organizing and Support
You will find a number of BTU members who come out to support workers' right throughout the year.
Thirty members of the BTU marched in the Save Our Schools Rally on July 30, 2011 in Washington, D.C. Participating were veteran teachers and provisional teachers; substitutes and retirees.
Marching behind our banner were other teachers from Massachusetts schools as well as graduate students from local colleges and other supporters of public education from Massachusetts.
Joining with protesters from around the country energized the group and deepened the commitment we all have for the struggle to save public education.
The Boston Teachers Union contingent was probably the second largest Union contingent at the rally, after the Milwaukee/Wisconsin contingent who had been organizing against the largest attack on working people since January.
BTU Scholarships
The Boston Teachers Union annually grants two $1,000 scholarships to matriculating seniors in each of Boston's high schools. We also give $1,000 scholarships to dependents of our members as well as to grandchildren of our retirees. Altogether, we proudly spend close to $70,000 per year in awarding these grants, which serve to promote the value of education.
